Coburn Nets All-Region Selection
Dec. 12, 2008
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis senior defender Michael Coburn, a native of Dundalk, Ireland, earned placement on the NSCAA All-Midwest Region team for the second year in a row as selected earlier this week. He garnered third team honors this season, his senior season with the Tiger men's soccer squad. In 2007, Coburn was named to the second team. The senior captain tallied two game-winning goals this season for Richie Grant's U of M squad. It was Coburn's header in the third minute of the nationally televised contest against No. 15 SMU, that won the game for the Tigers in an early October home match at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. He finished the season with two goals, while helping the Memphis defense to four shutouts, including shutting out conference foes Kentucky and South Carolina. Coburn's play in 2008 earned him First Team All-C-USA honors, signifying the first time a Memphis player has been selected to the first team since Dayton O'Brien earned the distinction in 2005. During his career, Coburn also picked up several other honors including Second Team All-C-USA in 2007, C-USA All-Tournament Team in 2005 and individual weekly honors such as C-USA Offensive Player of the Week and C-USA Defensive Player of the Week, as well as College Soccer News' Team of the Week honors.
