Tigers Kickoff Spring Season With Singles, Doubles Wins On First Day In Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. - The Memphis men's tennis team kicked off the 2010 spring season with several key victories in singles and doubles over the host USF Bulls in Tampa, Fla. Michael Janz, a newcomer from Lousanne, Switzerland, led the Tigers with a victory at the No. 3 position over USF's Romain Deridder, 6-3, 3-6, 10-4. Janz is currently tied for second place in the tournament's singles standings after picking up six points for the win. The tournament set up allows eight points for victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, six points for wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, four points for victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions and two points for wins at the No. 7 and No. 8 positions. John Taylor, a transfer from the University of Utah joined fellow newcomer Janz as a victor, defeating Alex Dukal, 6-3, 1-6, 10-5 at No. 7 singles. Jordan Smith, a junior from Memphis, Tenn., also picked up a first-day singles win, defeating USF's Thomas Estrada, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. In doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Smith and David Henry upended Estrada and Deridder, 8-3. At No. 4 doubles, Michael Hayes and Janz defeated Juan Carlos Acuna and Pukal, 8-5. USF finished last season ranked as the No. 37 team in the nation. The Tigers took six of eight singles matches to three sets with the Bulls, winning three.
