Men's Tennis Opens Season With 6-1 Win Over Michigan State

MEMPHIS - - The No. 33 Memphis men's tennis team (1-0) got off to a quick start with a win of the doubles point and used singles wins at No. 3, 5 and 6 to secure a 6-1 win over No. 52 Michigan State (0-1) in both team's season opener, Friday, at The Racquet Club of Memphis. Memphis got on the board first with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to claim the doubles point, 1-0. David O'Leary made it 2-0 Memphis with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, and was followed closely by David O'Hare's 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 to put the Tigers up 3-0. Michigan State answered back with a 6-4, 6-1 win by John Patrick Mullane over Johnny Grimal at No. 4 singles to prolong the outcome, but freshman Lukas Vrnak closed out the win with a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles to secure the win. The two teams opted to play out the remainder of the matches still on the court with it being both team's first dual matches of the season. Joe Salisbury came back from 4-3 down in the second set to win his match at No. 2, 6-4, 6-4, and was followed by Connor Glennon storming back from a first set 6-4 loss to win the second set 7-6. He then closed out the night with a 10-5 third set tiebreak. Memphis will go on the road to participate in the ITA Kickoff Classic, facing No. 8 Oklahoma on the road, Saturday, then facing either Harvard or Notre Dame on Sunday.
