MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's tennis team fell to 0-3 for the season with a 4-0 loss to host Middle Tennessee State and a 5-0 loss to Troy State, Saturday.
MTSU won the doubles point with two wins to start the day. Tigers Alistair Todd and Ben Stapp fell in a close-fought duel, 9-8 (5) at No. 1 doubles, while Jamie Adams and Michael La Haie fell to the No. 3 doubles team of Michael Chamberlain and Robert Gustaffson, 8-6.
Only three singles matches were needed for MTSU to sweep the Tigers. Freshman Ben Stapp fought Gustaffson at No. 3, losing the first set 6-3 before rallying back to win the second set 6-1. The third set was a battle which Stapp ended up losing, 10-7.
The Blue Raiders posted two-set wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles as Michael Lancefield defeated Jack Hu, 6-0, 6-3, while Mark Pellerin defeated Jamie Adams, 6-1, 6-2.
The Tigers then tried to regroup and face Troy State, which had been shutout by MTSU, 4-0, Friday. Again, the opposition took the doubles point with two wins. The No. 33-ranked doubles team of Willy Campos and Shannon Nettle defeated the Tigers' No. 1 team of Todd-Stapp, 8-4. The team of Kane-Nikolic defeated the U of M's Adams-LaHaie, 8-5.
The Tigers were unable to post any points in singles, as three of the four Tiger matches were two-set losses. Campos beat U of M sophomore Richard Magney 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1 singles while his doubles partner, Nettle, defeated Todd, 6-3, 6-0. Stapp was unable to put together another rally as he did against MTSU, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Dejan Nikolic. The final chance for a Tigers' point fell when Hu lost 7-5, 2-6, 5-10.
The road for the Tigers does not get easier as the U of M travels to Ole Miss to play the No. 6 ranked team, Thursday, at 3 p.m.
