Men's Tennis Blanks UT-Martin in Season Opener

Nashville, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's tennis team opened the 2002 spring season with a 7-0 blanking of UT-Martin at Nashville on Friday. The Tigers, ranked 74th in the pre-season by the ITA, take on 30th-ranked Vanderbilt in Nashville on Saturday.
In singles action, only one match was close. At number one, senior Richard Magney outlasted Peter Allnut (7-5, 6-7, 7-6). Joe Schmulian, Ben Stapp, Lee Taylor Walker, Alex Bucewicz and Michael LaHaie all easily won their singles matches. The Tigers also swept the doubles. Stapp and Walker defeated Allnut and DeWit Stegman, 8-6. Other Tiger winners were Michael Chamberlain and Schmulian at number two doubles and Bucewicz and LaHaie at number three. Memphis is now 1-0 on the season while UT-Martin falls to 0-1.
