DES MOINES, Iowa - The Memphis men's tennis team fell, 5-2, to the Drake Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa. After the loss, the Tigers' record stands at 1-4 on the season.

To open the match, the Tigers were swept in doubles for the first time this season. At the No. 1 spot, Drake's Mauricio Ballivian and James McKie defeated Jordan Smith and David Henry, 8-3. The Memphis pair falls to 2-3 in doubles this season.

At the No. 2 slot, the Tiger pair of Leon Nasemann and John Taylor fell to 3-2 on the year with a loss to Drake's Jean Erasmus and Guilherme Marsiglia, 8-5.

At No. 3 doubles, Jonathan Hadash and Ryan King of Drake upended Charlie Ramsay and Spencer Heflin, 8-3.

In singles, Michael Janz, a junior from Lousanne, Switzerland, picked up a victory at the No. 4 slot, defeating Hadash, 6-1, 6-0.

The Tigers also got a singles victory from fellow Tiger newcomer John Taylor, a transfer from Utah, who upended Drake's Ryan King, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 6 singles position.

At the No. 1 spot, Ramsay, a senior from Chattanooga, Tenn., fell to Ballivian, 6-3, 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Nasemann, a junior from Wuppertahl, Germany, won the first set over McKie, 6-4, but dropped the final two sets to his opponent, 6-4, 6-3.

At No. 3 singles, Henry, a sophomore from Signal Mountain, Tenn., put up a fight in the first set, but lost a tiebreaker to Marsiglia. The Drake netter won the second set, 6-1.

At No. 5 singles, Gaerthoeffner, a junior from Rheine, Germany, defeated Erasmus, 6-0, in the first set. The second set went to a tiebreaker with the Drake netter, winning 7-3. Erasmus won the third set, 6-0, to take the match.

 

 

The Tigers will return home for matches with Rhodes College and North Alabama next weekend.
