Feb. 12, 2006
The University of Memphis men's tennis team came just short of an upset, falling 6-1 at Vanderbilt, Sunday. Memphis battled with Vanderbilt starting right away in doubles, where the No. 1 team of James Spence and Sam Withell beat the team of Ryan Preston and Jordan Magarik, 8-6. Vandy answered back with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles, and the Commodores prevailed on the No. 2 match, 8-7 (7) to go up 1-0 early in the match. But Vanderbilt kept rolling, winning singles matches at No. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. Spence picked up Memphis' lone point with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Andy Mack at No. 3 singles.
