Memphis Tennis Upends Rhodes, 7-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis men's tennis team (5-2) picked up a 7-0 victory over cross-town rival Rhodes on Sunday afternoon at the Dunavant Tennis Center on the Rhodes campus. The match opened with the U of M taking the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Jorge Vazquez and Spencer Heflin upended Tyler Snedden and Grayson Lucas, 8-3. Vazquez and Heflin move their record to 1-1 in only their second match of the dual season together. The tandem fell to their opposition from No. 28 Vanderbilt on Friday. At the No. 2 slot, Jordan Smith and Benedikt Fischer upender Jon Moreno and Brad Pennington, 8-5. Smith and Fischer improved to 5-1 on the season. At No. 3 doubles, Leon Nasemann and Charlie Ramsay moved to 1-1 with the defeat of Morgan Slevin and Matt Westbrook, 8-6. Memphis swept the competition at singles play, as well. At No. 1 singles, Vazquez moved to 6-2 on the season with the win. The Tiger senior is currently ranked as the 102nd-best singles player in the nation. Earlier this season Vazquez beat the No. 23 and No. 26 ranked singles players. At No. 2 singles, Nasemann, a sophomore from Wuppertahl, Germany, defeated Snedden, 6-1, 6-0. At the No. 3 spot, Smith, a Memphis-native, upended Moreno, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 4 singles, Ramsay won 6-3, 6-2, over Taylor Simmons. At the No. 5 spot, senior Benedikt Fisher improved to 5-2 with a defeat of Riley Erhardt, 6-0, 7-6. To wrap up the singles competition, Michael Hayes, a junior transfer from Brunel University in London, England, improved to 4-1 by upending Lucas, 6-3, 6-3.
The Tigers will travel to Mississippi State, Georgia State and Alabama next weekend for road matches.
