Men's Tennis Blanks Marquette, 5-0
Feb. 28, 2003
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Memphis men's tennis team evened its overall record at 3-3 and improved to 2-0 in Conference USA play with a 5-0 victory over Marquette at South Florida, Friday. With the win, the Tigers will advance to play host South Florida, Saturday, at 1:30 p.m. (ET). The Bulls are currently ranked No. 21 in the country, while the Tigers are ranked No. 53 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. The Tigers opened the match by winning the doubles point, despite the 20th-ranked doubles team in the country of Ben Stapp and Lee Taylor Walker getting upset 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. It was the first doubles loss of the season for Stapp and Walker, who are now 5-1 at No. 1 doubles. The duo of Joe Schmulian and Alex Bucewicz won their No. 2 match, 8-2, and the all-Aussie duo of Brendan Malarkey and Alex Jago won their No. 3 match, 8-1, to give Memphis the doubles point. The Tigers then nailed down the win with straight set singles victories at No. 3-6. Stapp had split his No.1 singles match with Raj Gill, while Schmulian was up 5-0 in the third set after splitting the first two sets of his No. 2 match, 6-0, 3-6, when rain hit, causing the last two singles matches to not be completed. With a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, sophomore Alex Bucewicz improves to 5-1 on the season in singles. Bucewicz and Schmulian are now 4-2 at No. 2 doubles for the season.
Memphis is one of six C-USA schools competing at the Inner Conference Tournament in Tampa. USF earned the right to host one of the two Inner-Conference tourneys by earning the league's top seed in the C-USA Championship tournament last season. The other tournament is being held this weekend at TCU.
