University of Memphis sophomore James Spence downed his first collegiate ranked opponent at No. 2 singles in a 4-1 Tiger loss at No. 45 Tulane in the second round of the C-USA Inter Conference Tournament, Saturday.

Spence downed the No. 37 ranked player in the country, Dmitriy Koch, in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Koch is familar to Memphis tennis fans as he downed Memphis' Lee Taylor Walker in the semifinals of the ITA Southeast Regional that was hosted by the Tigers during the fall.

Memphis will face the loser of the UAB/USF match at 9 a.m., Sunday.
