FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - - The University of Memphis men's tennis team improved to 4-4 on the season with a 6-1 road win against St. John's University (1-9) at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., Friday.

Memphis got on the board first by winning the doubles point. The Tigers' duo of David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury got the first win of the afternoon, with an 8-2 decision at No. 2 doubles. St. John's answered back with an 8-5 win at No. 1, but the Tiger tandem of David O'Leary and Johnny Grimal battled back for the 9-8 win at No. 3 to put the visiting team up early.

David O'Hare then made it 2-0 Memphis with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. St. John's got on the board with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, but junior Johnny Grimal answered back for Memphis, coming back in the first set to win, 6-4, then winning his second set, 6-3, for the 3-1 lead.

Freshman Lukas Vrnak then closed out the win for the second time in his young career, downing Mark Mozer, 6-3, 7-6, at No. 3 singles for the team victory.

The two teams then played out the remaining matches. Joe Salisbury picked up his 50th career singles victory with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 three setter at No. 2 singles, while David O'Leary came back to win his match at No. 5, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.

Memphis will close out the two-game road swing at No. 23 Cornell, Sunday, at 11 a.m. (CT). The Big Red has won seven straight matches coming into Sunday's contest with the Tigers, and sports a 9-1 record. The will be the second top 25 opponent the Tigers will be facing in the last three matches, having dropped a match at No. 9 Ole Miss, 4-1, last week.
