MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's tennis team (9-6, 2-3 C-USA) won two close tiebreakers to claim the doubles point, then won five of six singles matches en route a 6-1 victory over C-USA foe Charlotte (3-10), Wednesday.

Memphis started the match with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles, then had to wait until both the No. 1 team of Lee Taylor Walker and James Spence and the No. 2 team of Alex Bucewicz and Sam Withell weathered 9-8 victories to head into the singles portion of the match up 1-0.

Spence then improved his singles mark to 10-3 on the season with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over Jonathan Clark, while freshman Luke Campbell used his first collegiate singles victory over Stuart Lynas, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 6 singles to put Memphis up 3-0 in the match. Walker closed out the victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1, followed shortly by junior Alex Bucewicz' 11th win of the season, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and junior Mark Finnegan's 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. Bucewicz improves his team-leading singles mark to 11-2 on the season, while Finnegan improves to 6-1 in his first match at No. 5 this season.

Again, the final point total came down to Marten Tamla and his opponent on the court at No. 4 singles. Tamla won the opening set, 6-3, but dropped a 7-5 second set to Dorian Host. In the super tiebreaker, Host prevailed 10-8 to pick up Charlotte's only point of the match.

Memphis will head back to the Lone Star State this weekend for a stiff weekend of competition. The Tigers will play at No. 8 Rice, Friday, then will face ranked opponents Virginia Tech and Texas Tech on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The Tigers will return to the HPER Courts, the site of the 2004 Conference USA Championships, beginning April 15th, Apr. 1st, against Murray State.
