Chadwell Seals Tiger Victory in Third Place Match
March 22, 2014
SAN DIEGO - -
Senior men's tennis player Ian Chadwell has only been a Tiger since January, but already helped the Tigers to a big road win with a come-from-behind victory that sealed a 4-3 Memphis (9-3) victory over #61 San Diego (8-7) in the third place match of the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic, Saturday afternoon.
Memphis won the doubles point for a third straight match in the tournament, with wins at two and three putting the Tigers up 1-0 on the scoreboard. The doubles team of Chadwell and Johnny Grimal won their 12th straight doubles match to improve to 12-0 on the season, 8-1.
But it looked like Memphis was in danger of losing a 3-0 lead for a second straight match when host San Diego stormed back with wins at 1, 3 and 4 singles to tie the match at 3-3.
Chadwell, playing at No. 5, won his first set, 6-3, then dropped the second set 6-4. He trailed 4-3 in the third set and the Tigers were in danger of dropping a second straight 4-3 match in as many days. But the Franklin, Tenn., native stormed back to win the last three points of the third set, picking up the 6-4 win to seal the match, 4-3, for the Tigers.
This marks the second straight season the Tigers have finished third in the San Diego tournament. After finishing third at last year's tournament, Memphis went 9-2 in the next 11 matches to advance to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time in school history.
This year's version of the Tigers will play at No. 5 Baylor, Friday, in Waco, then will travel to No. 26 Louisville for a pair of matches, including an Apr. 4 conference clash with the Cardinals and an Apr. 5 match against No. 36 VCU.
