Men's Tennis to Face Southern Miss in Championship of California Tournament
March 31, 2001
Irvine, Calif. -- - A quick show of hands. Who thought the championship match of the 22nd Annual Anteater Classic being held at the University of California-Irvine would come down to a match between two C-USA foes--Memphis and Southern Mississippi. Well, don't look now, but Sunday's championship match will be the same match-up that Conference USA hosted last year for its fifth-place match. Memphis advanced to the finals of the tournament with a 5-2 win over Sacramento State. The two points won by Sacramento State were the most won by a Tiger opponent in the tournament, but that will get tested, Sunday, when Memphis faces Southern Miss, a team that defeated Memphis 4-3 during the regular season last year, and then claimed fifth-place from the Tigers with a 4-2 win in the Conference USA tournament which was held in Hattiesburg. The two schools will do battle for the title at 9 a.m. (Pacific Time) on the campus of host UC-Irvine.
