Men's Tennis Knocks Off MTSU in Sun Belt Shootout

Updated Sun Belt Shootout Bracket MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - After bracket adjustments, Memphis men's tennis ended up playing tournament host Middle Tennessee State University in the opening match of the Sun Belt Shootout on Saturday morning. The Tigers (12-7, 3-3 C-USA) would go on to trump in-state rival MTSU 4-0. Memphis would drop the first match in doubles action at the No. 1 slot where Jordan Smith and David Henry fell to Ben Davis and Shaun Waters 8-5. However, the Tigers would overcome the defeat at the second and third flights to pick up the doubles point with an 8-4 downing from Joe Salisbury and David O'Hare over Elliot Barnwell and Kyle Wishingfrom and a tight 8-6 victory from Leon Nasemann and John Taylor over Dimitri Pippos and Matthew Langley. In singles, freshman netter Johnny Grimal set the tone early at No. 4 with his 6-1, 6-2 upending of Barnwell, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead over the Blue Raiders. Memphis would go up 3-0 with a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 win from Nasemann at No. 3 over Langley. Freshman Cedric de Zutter would clinch the win for the Tigers at No. 6 with his 6-1, 6-4 downing of Wishing. The other singles matches went unfinished.
