Men's Tennis Upsets No. 24 VCU on the Road, 4-3

RICHMOND, Va. - - David O'Leary came back from his first set loss to win a tiebreaker in the second and a 6-3 third set to secure a 4-3 Memphis (9-7) victory at No. 24 VCU (16-6), Sunday.
The Tigers jumped up 1-0 with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. The team of David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and the tandem of Lukas Vrnak and Johnny Grimal made it 1-0 Tigers with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
VCU answered back with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles to tie the match at 1-1. The home team went in front, 2-1, on the strength of a 6-2 , 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, but Johnny Grimal answered right back for the Tigers with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 to tie the score at 2-2.
Tigers' freshman Lukas Vrnak then put the Tigers' up ahead again at 3-2 with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.
But again, the home team answered back, with Max Wennakoski winning a third set tiebreak at No. 1 singles for the 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 decision and to tie the game at three all.
It all came down to the number five singles match, where Memphis' O'Leary and VCU's Jaime Vazquez split the first two sets. Vazquez jumped out to a quick 6-2 first set win, but O'Leary battled back, then had to fight through a 7-6 (7-5) second set tiebreak to even that match. O'Leary then held onto the momentum, going up 4-1 quickly in his match, and held on for a 6-3 third set win that secured the Tigers' win.
With 11 straight matches played away from home, the Tigers' return to the friendly confines of The Racquet Club of Memphis for two more regular season matches. Memphis hosts C-USA foe UAB, Friday, at 2 p.m., then hosts South Alabama, Sunday at noon in their regular season finale.
Memphis will then be the host team for the C-USA Championships, which begins Thursday, Apr. 18th at MUS.
