Men's Tennis Closes Regular Season With 5-0 Win
April 10, 2004
The University of Memphis men's tennis team (13-10) closed its regular season with a 5-0 win over the University of New Orleans, Saturday, after the match was pushed indoors at The Racquet Club of Memphis due to overnight and early morning rains. The win was a positive one for the Tigers, who are battling injuries while trying to prepare for the Conference USA Championships, which begin Thursday at the U of M Courts.
"We played as well as we have all year, which is really promising given that we host the championships beginning Thursday," Head Coach Phil Chamberlain said. With the win, the Tigers moved Chamberlain one win away from his 100th career win.
Memphis swept the doubles matches, with the No. 2 team of Alex Bucewicz and Marten Tamla winning 8-6 to wrap up the sweep. The Tigers then used straight set wins at No. 1, 2, 4 and 6 singles to complete the sweep.
The Tigers will find out Monday where they are seeded for the Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships which begin Thursday on the U of M's HPER Courts at the corner of Echles and Spottswood Avenues. Admission for the tournament is free and all 12 Conference USA teams sponsoring a men's tennis team will participate. The bracket will be posted on the Conference USA website at www.conferenceusasports.com and on the Tigers' website at www.gotigersgo.com.
