North Florida Uses Strong Singles Play to Take Close Win Over Memphis, 4-3

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The North Florida Ospreys used strong singles play to upend the Memphis men's tennis squad on Sunday at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Tigers won the doubles point but were unable to fend off their foes from Jacksonville, Fla. With the loss, the Tigers finish the 2010 regular season with a 10-11 record. Memphis took the early lead in the match after securing the doubles point over the Ospreys. The Tigers got a quick point lift in doubles when North Florida had to default at the No. 3 spot because they did not have enough players. With the default, Janz and Taylor improve to 8-4. The Tigers captured the doubles point with a victory at the No. 2 slot from seniors Spencer Heflin and Charlie Ramsay. The Pair upended Mortitz Buerchner and Leonardo Nahar, 8-4. The Memphis pair heads into the C-USA Tournament with an 11-4 mark. In singles, North Florida took the match at the No. 1 position with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, win from Buerchner over Jordan Smith. Smith falls to 4-9 in singles on the year. At the No. 2 spot, Henry picked up his third singles win of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Daniel Sotomarino. Henry finishes the regular season with an 11-9 record. At No. 3 singles, the Ospreys' Taylor Albrecht upended Ramsay, a senior from Chattanooga, Tenn., 6-4, 6-1. Ramsay has a 10-9 singles mark in his final season for the Tigers. At the No. 4 slot, Nahar of North Florida defeated Taylor, 6-2, 6-2. Taylor falls to 11-5 on the year. At No. 5 singles, Graham Edgar upended Michael Gaerthoeffner of Memphis, 6-3, 7-5. Gaerthoeffner, a junior from Rheine, Germany, falls to 13-8 on the year. At No. 6 singles, Janz picked up a default win for Memphis since North Florida did not have enough players.
The Tigers will now return to Memphis to prepare for the 2010 C-USA Tournament, which will be held from April 22-25 in Houston, Texas. North Florida 4, Memphis 3 |
