April 21, 2012
ORLANDO, Fla. - After the Memphis men's tennis C-USA Championship quarterfinal match on Friday was postponed due to rain, the Tigers (17-4) poured on the points against Southern Miss (9-15) in a 4-0 victory Saturday morning. Memphis, ranked 33rd in the latest ITA poll, advances to the semifinals and will face the winner between third-seed Rice and six-seed SMU. Senior Leon Nasemann led the Tigers to their first point in the match, defeating Alex Doleac, 6-2, 6-0, on court six. In No. 2 singles, sophomore Johnny Grimal earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Paulo Alvarado. Connor Glennon provided the U of M with its third point, winning 6-3, 6-0 over Juan Escobar at No. 4 singles. David O'Hare beat Matt Frost in straight-sets to give Memphis its fourth and match-clinching point. The No. 1 singles player won the first set, 7-5, and then took the second set in convincing fashion, 6-1. Joe Salisbury was leading in the third set, 3-2 against Inaki Belloso when the Tigers clinched the match. Salisbury dropped the first set, 6-2, before rebounding to win the second set, 6-1. No. 114 David O'Leary was in a tight match with Andrew Goodwin. The two players were tied at 2-2 in a first set tie-break. In a time-saving procedure, the singles matches in the men's tennis championship were played before the doubles matches. Since the Tigers reached four points in the singles matches, the doubles matches were not played. Weather and time permitting, Memphis will play in the semifinals this afternoon at the UCF Tennis Complex in Orlando, Fla.
