Memphis Takes Down Tulane, 4-1, to Advance to Second Round of C-USA Men's Tennis Championship

HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Memphis men's tennis squad opened the 2010 C-USA Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-1 comeback victory to upend the Tulane Green Wave on Thursday at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in Houston. The win is the Tigers' first opening round C-USA victory since 2004. With the victory, the U of M advances to the second round of the tournament to play No. 1-seed Tulsa at 8 a.m., at the Hess Tennis Stadium. Tulane's first season back to competitive competition after going on hiatus due to Hurricane Katrina ended with Thursday's loss. The Green Wave end the 2010 slate with a 3-18 mark. Tulane took a 1-0 lead after taking two of three doubles matches from their opponents from the Bluff City. At the No. 2 spot, Adam Bernstein and Rodrigo Rappaccioli defeated John Taylor and Michael Janz, 8-3. Taylor and Janz fall to 7-5 on the year. At the No. 3 doubles slot, Trevor Getz and Joe Young upended Charlie Ramsay and Spencer Heflin, 8-5. Ramsay and Heflin fall to 11-5 on the season. In singles, the U of M got the first victory with a 6-4, 6-1 victory from David Henry over Young and never looked back in the match. With the victory, Henry improved to 11-9 on the year. Memphis extended their lead to 2-1 with a win from Taylor over Coby Kramer-Golinkoff, 6-4, 6-4. Taylor ends Thursday with a 12-5 record. At the No. 1 slot, Jordan Smith upended Shaye Wali, 7-5, 7-6. Smith improves to 5-9. The Tigers capped off the victory with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, win from Michael Gaerthoeffner over Getz. Gaerthoeffner finishes the evening with a 14-8 mark. Memphis will face Tulsa on Friday. The Golden Hurricane comes into the match ranked No. 36 in the nation. Tulsa has captured the last four conference championships heading into 2010. The Tigers and Golden Hurricane faced eachother in the first round of the 2009 C-USA Men's Tennis Championship with Tulsa picking up the 4-0 decision over Memphis.
