Men's Tennis Advances Two to Finals Again
Sept. 16, 2007
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - For the second time in three days, the University of Memphis men's tennis team had to settle for a 'co-championship' as again a pair of Tiger teammates advanced to the finals of a draw at the Middle Tennessee Fall Classic. Rather than have teammates play one another, the team opted not to play in the final match after both Spencer Heflin and Michael Gaerthoeffner picked up straight set wins in the semifinals of the A2 singles draw. Heflin defeated Middle Tennessee's Alex McCann, 6-2, 6-4, while Gaerthoeffner took out Western Kentucky's Andy True, 6-4, 6-3. The singles final would have been the second championship final for both Heflin and Gaerthoeffner as both also advanced to the A2 doubles finals, with different Tiger teammates. Heflin advanced with teammate Charlie Ramsay, while Gaerthoeffner advanced with Benedikt Fischer. Not wanting teammates to play each other in doubles, the two teams did not play in the Friday finals. The Tigers will participate in next weekend's Southern Collegiate Classic, which begins Friday in Athens, Ga., at the University of Georgia. The University of Georgia is also the 2008 site of the NCAA Championships.
