Jago Advances to Round of 16

ATHENS, Ga. - University of Memphis sophomore men's tennis player Alex Jago was the lone Tiger to advance to the Championship Round of 16 at the Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Championships on day one of competition, Friday. Jsago received a first round bye, then downed Georgia Southern's Diego Flores, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to a 1 p.m., Saturday, match against Vanderbilt's Jens Pilgram Larson.
Another trio of Tigers won their first round matches, but fell in the Round of 32. Sophomore James Spence was one of six seeds in the top half of the draw to fall in the Round of 32. Spence received a first-round bye, then fell to Artie Peller from College of Charleston, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2. Junior Alex Bucewicz downed Diego Iglesias from East Tennessee State, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-2, before falling to Mississippi State's Luiz Carvalho, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1. Mark Finnegan also received a first round bye before falling to Georgia's Ricardo Gonzalez, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
In Flight III Singles, sophomore Trey Brower advanced to the second round via a bye, but fell to Lasha Janashia from Georgia Southern, 6-4, 6-4. Also in Flight III singles, junior Andrew Olswing fell to William & Mary's Steven Ward, 6-0, 6-0.
The pair of Tigers in the Flight I singles draw were also upended Friday, but will advance to the consolation draw. Marten Tamla will face the winner of the Allen Simmons (Furman) and Achim Roth (Armstrong State) at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, in the Consolation Bracket Round of 16. Also in that round is senior Lee Taylor Walker. Walker will face South Carolina's Marcus Westman at 8 a.m., Saturday. Walker was upended by Ole Miss' Karim Alaily, 7-5, 6-3, while Tamla fell 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1 to College of Charleston's Timo Siebert.
The doubles draw of the tournament begins, Saturday.
