Men's Tennis Advances Two to Quarters
Sept. 21, 2003
ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Memphis men's tennis team wrapped up its competition in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships with two Tiger entries advancing to the quarterfinal rounds. The doubles team of juniors Alex Bucewicz and Marten Tamla advanced to the quarterfinals portion of the Division II Doubles draw after upending top-seeded Brandi and Dolberg from Florida, 8-4, in the Round of Eight. But the team of Knorr and Cassidy from South Carolina, ended any Tiger hopes of an appearance in the finals with a 8-2 win over the Tigers in the first semifinals. Another Tiger advancing to the Round of Eight was senior Lee Taylor Walker (Jackson, Tenn./University School of Jackson). Walker won his Round of Eight Flight One Consolation singles match, 6-0, 6-4, over Marcus Westman from South Carolina, but defaulted his quarterfinal match against Geoffrey Russell from William & Mary. The Tigers did advance one player to the semifinals of a singles draw, as sophomore Trey Brower downed Brian Garfield from Jacksonville, 6-2, 6-4, to earn a Round of Eight match. In that match against Georgia State's Matija Sulin, Brower won the opening set, 6-4, before Sulin bounced back to win the second set, 6-4. But Brower prevailed in the third, winning 1-0 (3) to earn a semifinal match against Taavd Roos from Armstrong Atlantics. But one three-set match was all Brower could weather, winning the first set 6-4, before Roos came back to take the second and third sets 6-1, 1-0 (2). Roos eventually went on to win the Division III Singles Consolation Championship over Lander's Sean Voorhies, 6-4, 6-3.
Six Tigers will compete in this weekend's ITA All-American Pre-Qualifier in Chattanooga, Tenn. Walker, Bucewicz, Tamla, Mark Finnegan, Alex Jago and James Spence all earned invitations to the tournament, which has three stages: Pre-Qualifier, Qualifier and Main Draw.
