Four Tigers Advance in Championship Singles Draw at Virginia
Sept. 21, 2012
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - - The University of Memphis men's tennis team had four of six entries advance in the championship singles draws at the University of Virginia Ranked Plus One tournament, Friday. In doubles, two Tigers tandems fell into the back draws, but are still in contention for a consolation championship title, while the third Tiger entry will play for third place on the championship side. The day began with two rounds of doubles play. The duo of Joe Salisbury and David O'Leary won their opening doubles match in the Green Doubles draw, 8-3, over the North Carolina State duo of Powell and Weber. The Tigers then came up short of the No. 2 seeded team of Domijan and Richmond of host Virginia, 8-2, to advance to Saturday's third place match in the Green draw. That match will be played at 9 a.m., Saturday. In Black Doubles, the No. 38 ranked Tiger tandem of Connor Glennon and David O'Hare were upended by Wake Forest's team of Ho and Lee, 8-4, to fall into the consolation draw. The duo did advance to the consolation finals on the strength of a default due to illness from the VCU team of Wennakoski and Goransson, the No. 3 seed of the draw, and will face the Virginia tandem of Shane and Cornish, Saturday, at 9 a.m. The other Tiger team of Cedric DeZutter and Johnny Grimal will also play for a consolation final in the Silver Doubles bracket. Memphis lost its opening match, 8-6, to the VCU team of Vazquez and Argente, but bounced back to defeat NC State's team of Weigel and Paez, 8-3, to advance to the consolation final. After the two rounds of doubles, the singles sticks came out and four Tigers won their opening matches. In White Singles, No. 108 Connor Glennon battled Jon Ho again in singles, after Ho and his Wake Forest teammate defeated Glennon and teammate David O'Hare in doubles earlier in the day. This time, it was Glennon who prevailed, gutting out a pair of 7-6 set wins to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will face No. 5 seeded Austin Powell of NC State, Saturday at noon. A pair of Tigers picked up wins in the Orange Singles bracket. Johnny Grimal picked up a straight set win, 6-3, 6-4, over Virginia's Jonny Cornish, to earn a Saturday match against George Washington's Francisco Dias, Saturday, at noon. On the other end of the same bracket, teammate Joe Salisbury bounced back from a 6-4 first set loss against UNC Wilmington's Kosta Blank to win the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to a Saturday noon match against the No. 2 ranked player in the nation, host Virginia's Jamere Jenkins. In the Gold Singles bracket, No. 82 David O'Leary advanced to a noon Saturday quarterfinal match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over VCU's Claes Goransson. He will face Virginia's Harrison Richmond Saturday. Teammates David O'Hare and Cedric de Zutter will both play singles in the consolation draw on Saturday. O'Hare fell to Penn State's Thomas Hanzlik, 6-2, 6-0, in Blue Singles, while DeZutter fell to Virginia's Mac Styslinger, 6-3, 6-3. DeZutter will face Louisville's Michael Lippens, Saturday, at noon.
