Men's Tennis Marches on in Singles and Doubles Draws
Oct. 2, 2012
TULSA - - The University of Memphis men's tennis team went 3-1 in singles and 3-1 in doubles on Tuesday at the ITA All-American qualifiers at the University of Tulsa.
Joe Salisburycontinues his impressive run from the singles prequalifying draw following a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ole Miss' William Kallberg, the No. 4 seed in the draw. He advances to a Wednesday qualifying round match against North Florida's Moritz Buerchner. Buerchner came back from a first set loss to win his second round match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The two will face off Wednesday to see who earns one of 16 qualifying spots into the main draw that starts play on Thursday.
Salisbury was also busy on the doubles court, teaming with David O'Learyto win their opening round match 8-5 over the team of Daniel Kreyman and Adam Lee from Wake Forest University. The Tiger duo did not have much time to celebrate though, as they then had to play a second round doubles match, and racked up another win, 8-4, over the team of Tamas Batyi and Johannes Markel from UNLV. The tandem now faces the Hawaii team of Jonathan Brooklyn and Dmytro Kovalyov on Wednesday.
While O'Leary advanced two rounds in the doubles draw, he came up on the wrong end of a 7-6 (4), 6-2 decision against Stanford's John Morrisey to be eliminated from the singles draw. Teammate Connor Glennon also got in a tiebreaker, winning the first set tiebreak, 7-6, but then dropped the second and third sets, 6-1, 6-4, to fall out of the singles draw. But like O'Leary, Glennon fights on in the doubles draw, as he teamed with David O'Hare for an 8-5 win over the TCU team of Nick Chappell and JT Sundling to earn a Wednesday appointment on the court against Florida State's Dominic Cotrone and Anderson Reed. Memphis may have some familiarity with half of that Florida State duo, as Tiger teammate David O'Learydefeated Reed in the first round of singles play on Monday.
Teammate Johnny Grimal also split results on Tuesday, winning his singles match 6-1, 7-5 over Florida's Michael Alford and teaming with Cedric de Zutterin doubles for an 8-6 loss to the team of Alvaro Gutierrez and Matheus Pereira from Wichita State. On the singles side, Grimal will now face North Carolina's Ebsen Hess-Olesen in the third round on Wednesday to determine which player advances to the main draw. Grimal and Hess-Olesen already have some history on the young season, as the two squared off in the doubles draw last weekend at the University of Virginia tournament. That doubles match-up went to North Carolina in a tough 9-8 (5) match.
