Walker Advances to Third Round at ITA Pre-Qualifier

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - University of Memphis senior men's tennis player Lee Taylor Walker (Jackson, Tenn./Univ. School of Jackson) improved his fall singles mark to 4-3 with a second win at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying Tournament, Friday.
Walker used a 6-2, 6-3 win over Troy State's Emir Basic to advance to the Round of 64, where he will face Baylor's Jason Gould at 9 a.m., Saturday.
One of six Tigers to qualify for the pre-qualifying tournament, Walker and three of his teammates used first round victories to advance to the second round. Walker was joined in the second round by juniors Alex Bucewicz and Marten Tamla and freshman James Spence. Falling in the first round were junior Mark Finnegan and sophomore Alex Jago.
Bucewicz' participation in the singles portion of the draw came to an end with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Butler's Kevin Gill, the same opponent who defeated him in the first round of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in January.
Also eliminated from the draw with second round losses was Tamla. Tamla fell to seeded Daniel Jung from San Diego State, 6-3, 6-3. Jung will face Zach Dailey from Vanderbilt in the Round of 64, Saturday.
Spence was also eliminated Friday afternoon from the singles draw, falling to Virginia Tech's No.1 player, Stephane Rod, 6-2, 6-3. Rod will face Octavian Nicodim from Louisville, Saturday.
The six Tigers who qualified will also participate in the doubles draw, which begins play, Saturday.
