Bucewicz Upends Ranked Opponent at Arkansas Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Senior Alex Bucewicz came back from a first set loss to down his first ranked opponent of the 2004-05 men's tennis season in first round action of the A Singles bracket at the RazorRacket Invitational in Fayetteville, Friday. Bucewicz came back from a 6-4 first set loss to No. 114 Boris Kuharic of Oklahoma State to win the next two sets 6-2, 10-4. Bucewicz then downed Southwest Missouri's Nenad Curcic, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will face another Southwest Missouri entry, Pavel Hanek.
Bucewicz will be one of two Tigers in the quarters of the A Draw, as junior James Spence also won two matches to advance to a Saturday quarterfinal match. Spence defeated Saint Louis' James Wilson, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round, then downed Oral Roberts' Tyrone Hill, 6-1, 7-6, in the second. Spence will face Southwest Baptist's Dante Cipulli in the quarterfinals, Saturday.
In other A Singles matches, senior Marten Tamla won his opening round, 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 over Southwest Baptist's Johan Nortje, but fell to Oklahoma State's Thomas Bohunicky, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round. Junior Alex Jago also won his opening A singles match, 6-1, 6-4, over Illinois State's Alban Renard before falling to Southwest Missouri's Jiri Spousta, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Mark Finnegan suffered his first loss of the season with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 heartbreak to Arkansas' Andre Nicoara.
In the B singles bracket, senior Scott Felsenthal advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Saint Louis' Matt Rineberg and a 6-4, 6-0 win over Illinois State's Yohann Nograbat. Fellow senior Andrew Olswing also won his first set match, 6-3, 6-1, over Southwest Baptist's Brian Bajema, but fell, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 to Illinois State's Oscar Beich in the second round. Freshman Bryan Bankester won his opening match over Saint Louis' Michael Limoges, 6-1, 6-0, but fell to Oklahoma State's Artsem Burmistrau, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round. Sophomore Garrison Pilant, who was also slated to play B singles, was forced to withdraw from his first round match down 6-4, 5-4, due to injury. He also had to forfeit his consolation draw match to Saint Louis' Feder.
In the doubles draw, the team of Bucewicz and Felsenthal won their opening match, 8-3, over the team of Curcic and Queiroz from Southwest Missouri State, then fell, 8-4 to the duo of Cipulli and Nortje from Southwest Baptist. The duo of Spence and Tamla received a first round bye, then were upended by the Oklahoma State team of Bohunicky and Burmistra, 8-2. The final Tigers tandem of Finnegan and Bankster won their opening match, 8-5, over the SLU team of Rineberg and Limoges, but fell to Uskokovic and Gomez from Illinois State, 8-5, in the second round. The Tigers' doubles competition is complete with the three losses.
Memphis will wrap up the tournament, Saturday, then will return home for the ITA Southeast Regional that begins, Thursday.
