Tigers Make Great Run at ITA Men's All-American Championships

2011 Doubles Consolation Bracket Results/b> TULSA, Okla. - David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury made a great run into the quarterfinals of the main draw consolation bracket at the ITA Men's All-American Championships. The duo knocked off Alex Brigham and Adrien Puget of UCLA, a top-10 doubles team, before falling 9-8(8) to Ohio State in the quarterfinals. "David (O'Hare) and Joe (Salisbury) made a really great run in this tournament," University of Memphis men's tennis head coach Paul Goebel said. "It was great national exposure for our program, and it really gave us a chance to perform against some of the best players in the country. This gives us some great momentum going into the ITA Regionals next week." The duo went undefeated in three qualifying matches to move into the first round of the main draw. Eric Sock and Andre Stenger of Nebraska knocked off O'Hare and Salisbury 8-6, setting up the bout with the top-10 UCLA doubles team in the first round of the consolation bracket. O'Hare and Salisbury defeated UCLA 9-8(11) before falling to Ohio State. After receiving a bye in the first qualifying round, O'Hare and Salisbury, who are now 22-2 in doubles matches dating to last March, defeated Gregurovic/Nicol of Wichita State 8-5 to move on to the next day. Yesterday, the duo knocked off No. 50 Hume/Meredith of Boise State 8-6 before defeating Hemmeler/Saba of Duke to ensure a spot in the main draw. O'Hare and Salisbury also each made the final stage of the prequalifying round before losing their fourth match, which would have advanced each to the qualifying round. Grimal Advances to Singles Qualifying Round While one group of Tigers was competing in Chattanooga, another was giving it a go at the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Okla. Johnny Grimal, who received a bye in the first round, won three-straight matches in the pre-qualifying stage to advance to the first round of the All-American Championship Monday. Grimal posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Brandon Fickey of Tennessee in the second round and downed Ivan Sanchez Gomez of NC State 2-6, 6-1, 705 in the third round. He then wrapped up the pre-qualifying stage with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Cale Hammond from Duke. Grimal fell in the first round of qualifying to Billy Federhofer of Florida 4-6, 6-3,6-3 and then dropped a match to Dan Cochrane of Auburn 62, 6-4 in the consolation round. The Tigers' next event will be the ITA Regional in Knoxville, Tenn. on Oct. 22-24.
