Senior men's tennis player Johnny Grimal used two straight set wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic on Friday. He will face Duke's Jason Tahir in the quarterfinals, Saturday, at noon.

Grimal opened his morning on the doubles court with teammate Jarryd Woog. The duo won their first doubles match, 8-6, over the Florida Gulf Coast team of Lucas Vaz and Jordi Vives, drawing the tournament's No. 2 seeded team of Matthieu Froment and Jack Hamburg from Minnesota in the quarterfinals. The Tigers came up on the losing end of that meeting, falling 8-1.

On the singles court, Grimal opened his afternoon with a 6-3, 7-5 win over another Florida Gulf Coast opponent, this one Tianyu Bao. Playing in the Round of 16 later in the afternoon, Grimal defeated North Florida's Pablo Tellez, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinal match on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers' David O'Leary also won his opening match, defeating Florida Gulf Coast's Dean Tsamas, 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16. But facing the No. 3 seed in the draw, O'Leary lost in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Memphis had two other singles entries in the fall finale tournament. Freshman Jarryd Woog battled the tournament's No. 2 seed, Virginia's Harrison Richmond, but fell, 7-6, 6-2. Senior Cedric De Zutter also drew a seeded opponent in the first round, falling 6-1, 6-4 to No. 4 seeded Leandro Toledo of Minnesota. Both Woog and De Zutter moved into the consolation draw, but lost in their matches there, ending their fall schedules.
