MEMPHIS - -
Senior men’s tennis player David O’Leary was named the American Athletic Conference men’s tennis player of the week, Tuesday.
O’Leary was 2-0 in a pair of non-conference singles matches this past weekend. Against No. 18 South Carolina, O’Leary won his match at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4. He then won his match against No. 13 Mississippi State at No. 4, 6-4, 6-3. His win against South Carolina’s Thiago Pinheiro was his 50th career singles victory at Memphis.
The senior from Coventry, England, is now 9-8 in singles play in his final collegiate season and is 3-2 in singles this spring. Both of his losses have come to ranked opponents (No. 21 Nathan Pasha from Georgia and No. 108 Stefan Lindmark of Ole Miss).
This is his first career honor from the American Athletic Conference. He was a Conference USA first team singles honoree in 2012, when he won his first 22 straight collegiate matches as a freshman, finishing with a mark of 22-1.
He and his Tiger teammates play their first home matches of the season on Friday, beginning with a 2 p.m. match against Chattanooga. The Tigers will wrap up the double-header with a 7 p.m. contest against Murray State. Both matches will be played indoors at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
