Three Men's Tennis Players Advance in U.S. National Indoor Championship Qualifier

Grimal was one of three Tigers to advance in the qualifier Saturday.
The University of Memphis men's tennis team had three players pick up wins in the first round of the qualifying draw of the U.S. National Indoor Championships, Saturday. The Tigers had seven of the eight team members receive an entry into the qualifying round, with two teammates facing one another in the opening round.

Junior Connor Glennon was part of that Tiger tandem squaring off in the first round. He advanced to the second round with a 6-2, 6-1 win over teammate David O'Leary. Glennon will face No. 7 seed Bobby Reynolds (ATP No. 179) at 10 a.m., Sunday, on the Stadium Court.

Senior Joe Salisburywas the next Tiger through to the second round, winning a first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (3), then closing out the win with a 6-1 second set win over Jose Hernandez from the Dominican Republic, who is currently ranked 291 in the ATP singles rankings. Salisbury will face Portugal's Gastao Elias (ATP No. 175) on the Stadium Court following Glennon's match on Sunday.

Senior Johnny Grimalwas the final Tiger through to the second round of qualifying. Grimal defeated Frantisek Cermak of the Czech Republic, 7-6, 6-1, to earn a Sunday date against Rajeev Ram (ATP 146). That match is the third match of the day scheduled on the Stadium Court.

Three other Tigers also got on the court in the qualifying draw.

Senior David O'Hare, recently returned to the US after playing Davis Cup doubles for Ireland last week, fell to Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela, 6-4, 6-4. Fellow senior Ian Chadwell lost to Alex Kuznetsov, 6-1, 6-0 and senior Cedric De Zutterfell to Robby Ginepri, 6-2, 6-1.

The Tigers also received word on Saturday that the No. 1 doubles team of David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury had received a wild card entry in to the main draw doubles of the U.S. National Indoor Championships. The Tigers' tandem will face the top seed Bryan brothers, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the main doubles draw.
