H.E.B. Finals Rained Out
March 10, 2002 Corpus Christi, Texas - Memphis, which narrowly lost to 22nd-ranked Middle Tennessee last week in Murfreesboro, was hoping for a second chance against the Blue Raiders in Corpus Christi, Texas. The weather prevented it. The championship match of the H.E.B. Collegiate Team Championships in men's tennis will not be played due to heavy rains in the area. Memphis, ranked 70th in the latest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings, had earned a berth in the finals with wins over Ball State, number three seed Nevada-Las Vegas and the number two seed Louisville. The Tigers lost to Middle Tennessee, 4-3, last weekend. "I'm disappointed that we could not play the match to its entirety today," said head coach Phil Chamberlain whose Tigers are 7-4 on the season with six of those 11 matches coming against ranked teams. "We are probably playing our best tennis of the season so far. We played really well as a team this week in this tournament."
The Tigers will play three of their next four matches against ranked teams as well. A three match road trip takes them to #63 Georgia State, #65 Charlotte and unranked Davidson. The Tigers return home on March 21 to face #11 Ole Miss.
