Bucewicz Named C-USA Player of the Week
March 11, 2003
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Sophomore men's tennis player Alex Bucewicz (Melbourne, Australia) was named the Conference USA men's tennis player of the week, Tuesday. It is Bucewicz' first career league honor.
The sophomore has won seven straight singles matches and leads the team with a 8-1 mark in singles. His win helped Memphis secure its first road-win of the season over a nationally-ranked opponent when the Tigers defeated No. 47 William & Mary, 4-3, Sunday. The Tigers are currently 4-5 after falling at No. 67 Old Dominion, Monday, 5-2.
Bucewicz and doubles partner, Joe Schmulian, are also 5-3 at No. 2 doubles for the season after Schmulian missed the fall season with a torn ligament in his foot.
Bucewicz went 19-7 in singles in his freshman year, posting an 18-6 mark at No. 5 singles. A member of the Conference USA honor roll, Bucewicz won the consolation singles title at the Milwaukee to begin the 2003 spring season.
The Tigers are currently on a spring break trip through the Virginia/Washington D.C. area. They face the University of Richmond on the road, Tuesday, and will play at Virginia Tech, Thursday. While at Virginia Tech, they will also play a neutral site match against Cornell, Friday, before returning home for their first home match in 11 matches, Mar. 21st.
