Men's Tennis Travels to San Diego for Spring Classic

Memphis, Tenn: - The University of Memphis men's tennis team returns to action after a long layoff as they travel to San Diego, Calif., to compete in the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Memphis will open the tournament Thursday at 4 p.m. CST against tournament co-host San Diego. The eight-team tournament field features seven ranked teams: No. 20 Drake, No. 23 Harvard, No. 37 San Diego State, No. 38 San Diego, No. 44 Memphis, No. 72 Oklahoma State, and No. 73 UAB. Denver is the lone unranked team in the field.
San Diego enters the tournament ranked No. 38 and with a 9-4 record. The Toreros have won three straight matches and have lost just once at home this season. San Diego's Clarke Spinosa comes into the tournament as the No. 94 singles player in the country.
Memphis faces its seventh ranked opponent of the season Thursday when they take on San Diego and could face ranked opponents in their other two matches of the tournament. The Tigers and Toreros have faced just once all-time. Memphis lost the lone previous meeting 4-1, when the two squads faced off in San Diego in 2008. The Tigers feature two ranked singles players in No. 105 Joe Salisbury and No. 111 Lukas Vrnak.
After the match with San Diego, Memphis will face either No. 20 Drake or Denver on Friday. Memphis is 6-1 all-time against Denver and 0-2 all-time against Drake. Drake (14-1) has won 14 straight matches since losing their season opener. Three Drake players are ranked in singles: No. 50 Anis Ghorbel, No. 121 James McKie, and No. 125 Alen Salibasic. Denver (3-8) enters the tournament looking to end a six-match losing streak.
