Memphis, Tenn.-- - Some things just do not change. Just like the 1999 Conference USA Championships, the University of Memphis men's tennis team (14-13, 1-3) has been seeded eighth for the C-USA Championship tournament and plays ninth seed Marquette (7-10, 1-3) in its opening round, Thursday, beginning at noon.

The two schools met in the opening round of last year's championship, with Memphis sweeping the Golden Eagles, 4-0, before advancing to finish fifth, winning the consolation championship.

This will be the first meeting between Marquette and Memphis this season. Marquette enters the conference tournament coming off a 5-2 loss to DePaul and having won three of their last six matches. Three members of the Golden Eagles having winning singles records, including No. 1 Peter Mojzis (9-7), No. 2 Christoph Van Der Gucht (9-8) and No. 4 Carlo Rossi (9-7).

Memphis has won nine of its last 11 matches, with a 4-1 loss to DePaul snapping the Tigers' seven-match winning streak, their longest of the season. Five Tigers are at or above the .500 mark in singles, including No. 2 Daniel Demacek (12-8), No. 4 Ben Stapp (15-10), No. 5 Jack Hu (12-12) and No. 6 Chris Buckley (10-6) or Michael LaHaie (3-3). No. 3 Alistair Todd is just below .500 at 11-12.

A win against Marquette in 1999 brought a match against top-seeded Tulane. A win in 2000 will bring a match against top-seeded UAB, who swept the Tigers, 6-0, when they met in February. UAB has a first-round bye and plays the Memphis/Marquette winner at noon, Friday. The loser of the Meemphis/Marquette match plays in the ninth-place match at 9 a.m., Friday against the loser of the Saint Louis/UNC Charlotte match.
