MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Memphis men's tennis grabbed the No. 5 seed in the 2011 Conference USA Championships and will take on No. 4 UCF in first-round action at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The match, which is scheduled for 8 a.m. CT on Friday, April 22, marks the first meeting between the two squads this season.
The Tigers (15-9, 4-3 C-USA) will try to carry the momentum from their last outing, a 4-1 conference win over UAB, into the championships. UCF enters the tournament having compiled a 9-14 regular-season mark (1-1, C-USA) and the Knights are looking for redemption after dropping their last three contests. As always, the doubles point will be vital in the win-or-go-home match and Memphis tandem Leon Nasemann and John Taylor will be a key at the No. 3 slot. The duo wrapped up the regular season with a 19-4 overall mark. In singles, the Tigers will need strong performances from any participating freshman netters. Joe Salisbury, Johnny Grimal and Cedric De Zutter all have winning singles records entering their first collegiate post-season. Last season at the conference championships, the sixth-seeded Blue and Gray picked up its first opening round win since 2004 with a 4-1 downing of Tulane. The Tigers would then fall in the next round to No. 1 seed Tulsa, 4-0.
