MANCHESTER, England - - Rising senior men's tennis player Joe Salisbury made the most of his summer trip home to England, picking up his first career ATP singles points with a pair of wins in the Aegon GB Pro-Series Manchester event, Wednesday and Thursday.
Playing in the main draw of the Futures event, Salisbury picked up his first career ATP singles point with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7) victory over Alex Jhun, Wednesday. Salisbury then upset the defending tournament champ and the world number 315 ranked player Albano Olivetti, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in the second round, Thursday, to advance to the quarterfinals.
His run in the tournament came to an end in the quarters, where he fell to No. 6 seed Richard Gabb, 7-5, 6-3.
The wins in the Futures event cap an impressive junior campaign for Salisbury. After helping Memphis to a second-straight NCAA tournament appearance and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Round of 16, Salisbury was named first team all-conference in doubles and second team all-conference in singles. He and doubles teammate David O'Hare finished the year as the No. 39 ranked doubles team in the US and were named the C-USA Doubles Team of the Championship after helping backstop the Tigers to their first-ever C-USA championship.
Salisbury also grabbed off-the-court honors, being voted to the C-USA All-Academic Team. He will remain home in England through the summer and will return to Memphis for his senior season, which will find him as one of four seniors for a Tigers squad that finished the year ranked No. 20 in the country.
The Tigers will compete in the American Athletic Conference for the upcoming 2013-14 season. The American Athletic Conference men's tennis championship will be played in Memphis in April of 2014.
