Jorge Vazquez upended Clemson's Carlos Alvarez, the nation's preseason 77th-ranked singles player, at the 2008 Blue and Gray Invitational in Montgomery, Ala. This was Vazquez's first match as a member of the Memphis men's tennis team. The senior is a junior college transfer from Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas. He sat last season out due to NCAA rules.

At Tyler, Vazquez helped the Apaches to a No. 2 finish at the NJCAA Division I National Championships. He went 3-1 in singles play at the national championships and was 2-1 in doubles play. Was ranked as the No. 1 singles player in the mid-season Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
