Men's Tennis Wraps Up First Fall Tournament of 2010-11
Sept. 27, 2010 ATHENS, Ga.--The U of M men's tennis program concluded play at its first fall tournament on Sunday. In all, the Tigers tallied 10 wins at the 43rd Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia. "This was a great first tournament for our young team," Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "Our freshmen performed very well, Cedric de Zutter won three solid matches and Joe Salisbury and David O'Hare had an excellent tournament." In the Division III Singles flight, De Zutter, a freshman from Belgium, kicked off his career as a Tiger by defeating Jorge Suarez of South Florida in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and Trey Walston of Alabama, 7-5, 6-1, on Friday. De Zutter won again on Saturday morning upending Campbell's Dominik Kaniewski, 6-0, 6-2 before his first only loss of the tournament to Paul Bartholomy of Wofford, 6-2, 7-6(3), on Sunday. As a pair, O'Hare and Salisbury won all of their matches in the Division II Doubles flight, beating duos from South Carolina, 8-3, Winthrop, 8-2, and Mercer, 8-5, before defaulting Monday's matches. "With a lot of top teams competing, the tournament provided us a good measure of where we stand at the moment," Coach Goebel said.
Senior Jordan Smith and junior David Henry travel to the ITA/D'Novo Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., which kick off on Saturday Oct. 2, as the rest of the Tigers will head to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the UTC Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, starting Friday, Oct. 1.
