Sept. 27, 2013
MEMPHIS - -
It's the first national championship on the University of Memphis men's tennis team's calendar and it begins on Saturday with the prequalifying round of the Saint Francis ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa.
Four Tigers are en route Tulsa on Friday for the prequalifying round, including seniors Cedric De Zutter, David O'Hare and David O'Leary. They are joined by freshman Jarryd Woog in the prequalifying singles draw, which begins play Saturday morning. There are more than 250 student-athletes from around the country in the prequalifying draw, which will play two rounds of singles on Saturday. Players who pick up three wins in the prequalifying draw will advance to the qualifying draw, where Tigers Connor Glennon, Johnny Grimal and Joe Salisbury will join the field with their first-round qualifying round matches on Monday.
Grimal and De Zutter are both off to 3-1 starts in singles play so far this season. Grimal went 3-1 at the tournament in Chicago, while De Zutter went 3-1 in singles at the Virginia tournament last weekend. Woog and O'Leary both last played at the Chicago tournament and finished with a 2-2 mark in singles play. O'Hare is the lone Tiger to play in both tournaments to start the fall. The senior had a tough draw to start the season, going 0-3 at the Chicago tournament, then faced three straight ranked opponents at the Virginia tournament last weekend. He brings momentum with him to the ITA singles draw though, having upended No. 70 Nikita Fomin of George Washington in his last match at the Virginia tournament, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
The qualifying round will feature one round of singles play on Monday, a second round on Tuesday and the third round on Wednesday. Singles winners from Wednesday's third round matches will advance into the Main Round draw, which opens play on Thursday.
Tuesday will also mark the beginning of the qualifying round of doubles play with two rounds of doubles on the slate. Memphis will have one entry in the qualifying doubles draw, as Grimal and O'Leary will team up to try to make a run to the main draw in doubles. The duo is already 2-1 on the season. The qualifying doubles draw wraps up Wednesday with the third round winners advancing into the main draw.
The doubles main draw is where the No. 20 ranked team of O'Hare and Salisbury will begin their doubles run. The duo bounced back from a season-opening loss in Chicago to finish third with an 8-5 win over the Virginia team of Justin Shane and Luca Corintelli.
The draws for the prequalifying rounds are not expected until Friday evening. You can follow the event's website HERE:. Memphis results will be posted at www.gotigersgo.com at the end of each day.
