Men's Tennis Advances Four into Second Round
Four members of the University of Memphis men's tennis team are already through to the second round of the Icy Hot/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) pre-qualifier, Friday.
Senior Lee Taylor Walker (Jackson, Tenn./Univ. School of Jackson), juniors Alex Bucewicz and Marten Tamla and freshman James Spence all advanced to the second round with first-round victories, Friday.
Walker came back from a 7-6 first set loss to down Rice's Vuk Rajevac, 6-3, 6-2 in the second and third sets to advance to a second-round match-up with Troy State's Emir Basic. Basic also came back from a first set loss, 6-2, to win the second and third sets 6-1, 6-2 over Georgia Tech's Jack DePaolo.
Spence used a straight set, 6-4, 6-4, win over Baylor's Jon Reckewey to advance to a second-round match against Virginia Tech's No. 1 singles player, Stephane Rod. Rod overcame a 6-3 first set loss to Albano Franco from Georgia State to win sets two and three 6-3 and 6-2.
Bucewicz was another three-set victor, dropping his first set 6-3 to Minnesota's Brian Lipinski, before storming back for a 6-0, 6-2 win to advance to a second round match-up with Butler's Kevin Gill. Bucewicz faced Gill last year in the first round of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, falling 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 to the Toledo player. Bucewicz then reeled off four straight win to claim the consolation singles title.

Tamla will face Daniel Jung from San Diego State, one of the seeded players in the tournament, at 5:30 p.m., Friday night in the second round.
A pair of Tigers were eliminated from the main draw, Friday. Sophomore Alex Jago had his singles mark dropped to 4-2 following a 7-6, 6-1 loss to Denver's Hans Peter Gaber. Gaber will face Florida State's Jonathan Sucupira, Friday afternoon.
Also falling was junior Mark Finnegan. Finnegan fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 to Ball State's Patrick Thompson. Thompson will advance to face Ricardo Almeida from UT-San Antonio.
