Five members of the University of Memphis men's tennis team will open the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional, Thursday, at The Racquet Club of Memphis. The qualifying singles round will begin at 9 a.m., Thursday, and will feature 32 Division I men's tennis players trying to win their way to one of eight qualifying spots in the main draw, which opens play, Friday. Seniors Marten Tamla and Scott Felsenthal (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) will be the first Tigers to step onto the courts. Tamla faces Alabama's Jordie Kindervater at 9 a.m. The winner of the match will play the winner of the Frank Green (Florida A&M)/Daniel Balog (Georgia State) match in the second round. Felsenthal will play UT Martin's Dirk Pinsloo, also at 9 a.m., with the winner advancing to face the winner of the Taylor Striplin (Alabama)/Michele Panzeri (Tennessee Tech) match. Senior Mark Finnegan will take to the court at 10:30 in a match against Troy's Robert Van Swelm, while junior Alex Jago will begin his match against Tulane's Magdy El-Midawy at 11:45 a.m. Memphis found out late Wednesday afternoon that Andrew Olswing (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) will also be in the field, following two withdrawals. Olswing will now face Miami's Neil Sehgal, beginning at noon, with the winner advancing to face the winner of the John Thornton (Tennessee)/Reid Bourgeois (Southern Miss) match. The main draw of the event, which will include the eight quarterfinalists from the Thursday competition, will begin on Friday. The main draw features 128 of the top men's tennis players in the country, including Kentucky's Jesse Witten, the tournament's top seed. Witten is currently ranked No. 3 in the country. Joining him from the nation's top 10 will be Auburn's Zoltan Pelva, the No. 6 player in the country and the No. 2 seed for the tournament. This will be the second consecutive year that Memphis has hosted the Southeast Regional, one of Seventeen ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over these last three weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles winner and the doubles finalists advance to the 2004 ITA National Indoor Championships. The 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first events - the Riviera/ITA Women's and IcyHot/ITA Men's All-American Championships - were held earlier this month, and the third event is season-ending NCAA Championships in May. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country, the ITA National Small College champions, top performers from the ITA All-American Championships and at-large card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
