Men's Tennis Gets Five In To Singles Draw for ITA Regional
Oct. 16, 2006 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's tennis team had five singles players chosen for the field of the 2006 ITA Southeast Regional, which will be hosted by the University of Kentucky, beginning Friday. The tournament has been played for the past three seasons at the University of Memphis, but was moved this year with The Racquet Club of Memphis' only available weekend filled by the Outback Champions Series Event earlier this month. All three Tiger freshman were selected for the singles draw, as were junior college transfers Amrit Narasimhan and Benedikt Fischer. Freshmen Spencer Heflin (Memphis, Tenn./MUS), Cody Loup (Baton Rouge, La./Catholic) and Charlie Ramsay (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie HS), will also be participating in their first ITA event, while Narasimhan and Fischer will be looking to build on solid showings at the ITA All-American that was held at the University of Tulsa last month. One more Tiger will be added to the doubles field, as transfer Jimmy Khougassian is listed as participating with Spencer Heflin right now, although he has played all three fall tournament teamed with Ramsay, carrying a 6-5 overall record. The pairings will likely be corrected at the coaches' meeting prior to the tournament beginning. The tournament features some stiff competition, as the Southeast Region is one of the toughest regions in college tennis. Twenty-four of the nation's top 125 singles players will be in action at the ITA Southeast Regional, including three of the country's top 10, led by No. 3 Luigi D'Acord from Miami. The entire tournament draw should be announced either Monday or Tuesday.
