MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers men's tennis squad is headed to Lexington, Ky. and the campus of the University of Kentucky for the 2008 Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional. 125 men's tennis players from across the southeast region are gathering for competition this weekend in Lexington. 22 different schools in the region are represented including the U of M, who sends four players to the tournament; Jorge Vazquez, Leon Nasemann, Charlie Ramsay and Benedikt Fischer.

Action begins today at the Boone Tennis Center at 8:30 a.m. Jorge Vazquez, the Tigers' No. 1 singles player, comes into the matches this weekend with a mark of 7-2. Vazquez defeated the No. 77 ranked men's tennis player in his first tournament as a member of the Tiger tennis team, when he took down Clemson's Carlos Alvarez at the 2008 Blue and Gray Invitational in Montgomery, Ala. In his last tournament, the senior from La Coruna, Spain, advanced to the qualifying round of the 2008 D'Novo ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. Vazquez is the first Memphis men's tennis player since Lee Taylor Walker in 2003 to win four matches at the ITA All American Tournament. Vazquez defeated players from Cleveland State, Drake, Minnesota and Texas A&M in the the pre-qualifying round of the tournament.

Leon Nasemann, a sophomore from Wuppertahl, Germany, comes into this weekend's matches after going 0-1 at the 2008 D'Novo All-American Tournament. The sophomore was defeated by Oral Roberts' Alex Kotsuik, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Charlie Ramsay, a junior from Chattanooga, Tenn., went 1-1 in his last tournament for the U of M. Ramsay won his first round match, defeating Abilene Christian's John Strahl, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, at the 2008 ULL Invitational in Lafayette, La. He dropped his second match to Louisiana's Stefan Hawkins, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0.

 

 

Benedikt Fischer, a senior from Dusseldorf, Germany, was 1-1 at the ULL Invitational. Fischer won his first match against Benjamin Enke of Southeast Louisiana, 6-4, 6-4. Fischer fell in his second round match, losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, to Javier Pulgar Garcia.

Memphis will finish up the fall season next weekend when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the 2008 Crimson Tide Invite.
