Four Men's Tennis Players Heading to Dick Vitale's Tournament
Nov. 6, 2013
MEMPHIS - -
Four members of the Memphis men's tennis team will travel south to Florida to participate in the Dick Vitale Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic this weekend. The tournament is one of the few college tournaments played on clay during the fall season and will be the final fall tournament of the year for Cedric De Zutter, Johnny Grimal, David O'Leary and Jarryd Woog. It will be the second tournament of the fall on clay for De Zutter, O'Leary and Woog, who also participated in the USA F28 event in Birmingham, Ala., in October.
Woog leads the foursome heading to Florida with eight singles victories in his first collegiate semester. He sports an 8-5 overall record and advanced to the third round of the qualifying draw of the Birmingham event in his last outing on clay. Grimal brings a 7-3 overall mark into his first tournament on clay this fall. The senior last played singles at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals, advancing to the Round of 16 before suffering a three-set loss. O'Leary (5-5) and De Zutter (4-4) are both looking to finish their fall slates with a singles mark over .500. Both played at the Birmingham Futures event, with O'Leary advancing to the final round of the qualifying draw before suffering a three-set loss.
The Lakewood Ranch tournament is already well-known to followers of the Memphis tennis programs. The Memphis women's team has had a lot of success at the event over the past two seasons and will be joined by members of the men's team for the first time.
Tournament play begins on Friday, November 8th, and runs through Sunday. The men's field features a 32-player singles bracket and a 16-team doubles draw.
Results from each day of the tournament will be posted at www.GoTigersGo.com.
