Memphis men in second after Day One at SIU McDonald's

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Three Tiger field athletes finished in the top three in their respective disciplines, Friday, at the SIU McDonald's Invite. Memphis wound up in second place on the day, with 31 points. Host Southern Illinois leads the way with 34 points. Sophomore Karlis Pujats, who last week set a school record in the indoor pole vault with a 5.36m (17' 7") mark at the McCravy Memorial, won the vault again this week with a 5.00m (16' 4.75") height. Freshman Austin Crenshaw and sophomore Nate Arnold tied for fourth with a 4.55m (14' 11") mark. In the long jump, Cam Baker finished third with a career-best 7.08m (23' 2.75") leap, while senior Darrell Lewis finished seventh after a 6.41m (21' 0.50") jump. In the men's weight throw, senior Knut Syversen faced off against the nation's leading weight thrower in Southern Illinois' J.C. Lambert. Lambert got the better of Syversen in this battle, while the Tiger finished third with a 19.41m (63' 8.25") toss. Teammates Tom Willcox (fifth, 17.51m), Andrew Miller (sixth, 17.35m) and Savvas Arrestis (eighth, 17.17m) all earned points for the Tigers on day one. The SIU Invitational will continue, tomorrow, beginning at 10 a.m. with the conclusion of the field events. The track events are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
