Carbondale, Ill. –After seven athletes posted season-best performances at the opening day of the SIU McDonald’s meet on Friday, the University of Memphis track and field teams returned for the final day of completion on Saturday and set 17 additional individual season-best marks.

Both the men’s and women’s Memphis track teams finished second in the team standings. The men’s squad finished with 89.5 points with host Southern Illinois University taking first with 207.5 points. The Lady Tigers posted 101 points as a team and SIU finished first with 175 points.

The meet resumed Saturday morning with the men’s and women’s shot put, men’s and women’s triple jump and the men’s and women’s high jump competitions. Memphis wasted no time as the men’s and women’s shot put competition saw four Tigers set season-bests.

Junior Marina Vojinovic finished fifth in the women’s shot put with a season-best throw of 14.49m (47-06.50). Senior Karmyn Clarke came in seventh with her season-best throw of 14.21m (46-07.50).

In the men’s shot put, senior Seth Major and junior Knut Syversen finished fourth and fifth while the freshmen duo of Tom Wilcox [14.83 (48-08.00)] and Andrew Miller [14.50 (47-07.00)] finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Major posted a season-best throw of 16.11m (52-10.25). Syversen also threw a season-best toss of 15.79m (51-09.75).

Sophomore jumper Vivian Haynes tied her season-best jump of 1.58m (05-02.25) to finish third for the Lady Tigers. Junior Preston Williams had a season-best high jump of 1.89m (6-02.25) finishing sixth ahead of teammate Darrell Lewis. Lewis finished seventh with his mark of 1.84m (6-00.50).

The Tigers took to the track around lunch time and the season-best performances continued. Junior sprinter LaShundra Kershaw won the 60m dash with a time of 7.74. Freshman Holly Joiner finished sixth for the Lady Tigers in the 60m dash with a time of 7.91 seconds. In the men’s 60m dash, junior sprinter Frashod Barlow posted a season-best time of 7.05 seconds to finish second.

The men’s 60m hurdles competition was full of Blue and Gray as Memphis had three top-five finishers. Sophomore Robert Jackson finished first with a new season-best time of 8.26 seconds followed Williams (8.26) in second and junior Darius Anderson (9.29) who finished fifth. Senior Tayanna Simpson returned to the women’s 60m hurdles competition and finished third with a time of 8.72.

Barlow also finished second in the 200m dash with a time of 22.80 and Kershaw finished second in the women’s 200m dash with a season-best tying time of 25.22 seconds.  Joiner finished with another top-10 finish in the women’s 200m dash with a season-best tying time of 26.06.

Freshman Monica Mason finished first in the 400m dash with a time of 58.28 and sophomore Keyona Neal finished third with a time of 58.61. Richard Lowe (50.57) and Alex Sweet (50.76) finished third and fourth, respectively, for the Tigers in the 400m dash.

Sophomore middle distance runner Kayleigh Brown set a personal-best time of 5:01.67 in the women’s mile to finish first in the competition. Brown posted a third place finish in the 800m run with a time of 2:18.92.

Freshman middle distance runner Abdi Guleed posted a personal-best 800m run time of 1:56.19 to finish third followed closely by fellow Tiger Stephan Ender who finished fourth with a season-best time of 1:56.40.

The men’s distance runners had a good showing in the men’s 3,000m run as freshman Brieuc Vandeleene took home first place honors with a time of 8:39.15. Junior Edwin Kipkorir finished fourth with a mark of 8:54.77.

In the women’s 3,000m run, freshman Louisa Lingley and sophomore Jasmine Darden finished fourth and fifth for the Lady Tigers. Lingley posted a time of 11:01.38 while Darden finished with a time of 11:01.98.

The Tigers will hit the road again next weekend as they will travel to the University of Indiana for the Hoosier Hills Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., on Friday Feb. 12.
