Track and Field Is Lovin' It at McDonald's Invite

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis track and field wraps up action at the McDonald's Invite today. Both teams competed well as they brought home second place finishes on both sides. Lady tiger throwers go 1-2-3 in the shot put. Senior Susan King led the way with a throw of 16.71 meters (54-10.00). Sivan Aballi was right behind her with a final throw of 15.73, with Charlotte Abrahamsen nipping at their toes with a launch of 14.60 meters (47-11.00) picking up third place. The male throwers went on a frenzy in the shot put taking third through sixth place. Glen Edwards was a dominate figure as his throw of 16.81 meters (55-02.00) led the men's side. Chen Edri jumped 1.68 meters (5-06.00) in the high jump to place second. Abrahamsen had a height of 1.63 meters (5-04.25) good enough for a sixth place showing. With a height of 1.96 meters (6-05.00) senior Andre Hicks placed second in the high jump, for his personal best of the season. Jerome Leslie had a leap of 1.91 meters (6-03.25), bringing home fourth place. In the triple jump, Aaron Whetstone, Leslie, Preston Williams and Richard Swaby all finished in the top eight for the Tigers. Whetstone placed second with a mark of 14.52 meters (47-07.75), a few inches short of his personal best. Leslie placed fifth with a mark of 13.95 meters 45-09.25. Williams and Swaby rounded out the pack with jumps of 12.92 meters (42-04.75) and 12.23 meters 40-01.50.
LaShundra Kershaw won the women's 60-meter dash in a time of 7.70. Gaylon Muhammad had a time of 7.91, also advancing to the finals. Holland Thomas finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.11. In the men's 60-meter dash, Frashod Barlow crossed the line in a time of 6.93 to take home third. Darius Anderson crossed the line in 8.43 in the 60-meter hurdles to place second. Williams placed fifth with a time of 8.62. Tina Sherratt ran 5:04.73 in the women's mile to place third, in the field of 32 competitors. Sherratt followed up her performance with a second place showing in the 800 meters, running a time of 2:18.75. Jorgen Ekdahl and Guy Hudson competed in the men's mile, with the pair recording times of 4:32.27 and 4:36.33. Jessica Wright placed fifth in the women's 400-meter dash in a time of 58.04. She then placed sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 25.68. Barlow placed third in the men's 200 meter dash, with a time of 22.64. Sam James and Guy Hudson both competed in the 800 meters for the Tigers. James clocked in a time of 1:58.92, while Hudson crossed the line in 2:00.14. The men's 4x400 of Jarred Jones, Anderson, James and Richard Lowe placed second with a time of 3:25.37. Both the men's and women's teams placed second overall for the invitational. Track and field will return to action next weekend as they head across the bridge to the Tyson Invitational, held at the University of Arkansas. |
