Tigers Post Improvements Prior to C-USA Championships

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - With the Conference USA Indoor Championships less than a week away, the University of Memphis track and field teams traveled to Cape Girardeau, Mo., for the Redhawk Invitational hosted by Southeast Missouri State University, in hopes of improving individual marks heading into the championships.
Two-time All-American Steffen Nerdal returned to the ring for the first time in three meets and he came away with another NCAA qualifying mark of 22.56m (74-00.75). Junior Knut Syversen finished third in the competition with an NCAA qualifying mark of 20.04m (65-09.00). Syversen joins Nerdal as the two Tigers to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
Junior LaShundra Kershaw took home first place in the 55m dash with a personal best time of 6.99 seconds. Freshman Holly Joiner also recorded a personal-best in the 55m dash and she finished fourth with a time of 7.20 seconds.
In the men’s 55m dash, junior Frashod Barlow posted his first, first place finish of the season with a season best time of 6.50 seconds. Sophomore Robert Jackson led three tigers to the top-three spots in the men’s 55m hurdles. Jackson finished first with a personal best time of 7.68 seconds followed by senior Marvin Stewart’s second place time of 8.11 seconds and junior Preston Williams in third with a time of 8.25 seconds.
Senior Tayanna Simpson finished first to be among five Lady Tigers in the top-10 in the competition. Simpson posted a personal best time of 8.03 seconds in the prelims and ran 8.05 seconds in the finals to take home first place. Freshman Quaniqua Jones (8.30) and junior Holland Thomas (8.40) finished second and third, respectively. Desiree’ Blow finished fifth with Vivian Haynes seventh to round out the five top-10 finishes in the 55m hurdles.
Sophomore Kayleigh Brown posted a first place finish in the 800m run with a personal best time of 2:14.43. Teammate Jasmine Darden finished second with a personal-best mark of 2:22.34 beating her previous personal best by 13 seconds.
Freshman Kirstern Berding finished second in the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.60m (5-03.00) while Haynes finished third with the same mark. Berding finished second due to results in the jump off. In the women’s pole vault, freshman Lauren Gale finished third with a vault of 3.35m (10-11.75) and freshman Alyssa Northcutt finished tied for fourth with a vault of 3.20m (10-06.00).
In the throwing events, the Lady Tigers had two top-five finishes in the shot put with junior Marina Vojinovic finishing second with a season best throw of 14.90m (48-10.75) and senior Karmyn Clark finishing fourth with a throw of 13.68m (44-10.75). Clark posted a third place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 16.91m (55-05.75) and senior Angela Wigley finished fourth with a throw of 15.72m (51-07.00).
In the men’s shot put, the Tigers had four top-10 performances with freshman Tom Wilcox leading the way. Wilcox finished fourth with a mark of 15.98m (52-05.25). Senior Seth Major finished fifth (15.70m [51-06.25]) followed by freshman Andrew Miller (15.28m [50-01.75]) and Syversen in ninth with a mark of 14.67m (48-01.75).
The Tigers will travel to Houston, Texas for the C-USA Indoor Championships on the campus of the University of Houston next weekend.
