Nerdal Earns Second All-America Performance in Weight Throw
March 13, 2010 Fayetteville, Ark. – The University of Memphis track and field program was represented by senior thrower Steffen Nerdal at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Nerdal earned his second-straight and third overall All-America performance with a second place finish in the weight throw. “That was a remarkable performance by Steffen today,” head coach Kevin Robinson said. “He threw personal-bests today and that is remarkable. I am disappointed with the second place finish because he was ready to throw farther than he did, but that doesn’t take anything away from his performance today.” The Norwegian native opened the trials with a throw of 21.89m (71-09.81) followed by a mark of 22.26m (73-00.37) on his second throw. With his final throw of the trials, Nerdal tossed a personal-best and University of Memphis record throw of 23.19m (76-01.00) placing him second entering the finals. Nerdal opened the finals with a toss of 23.22m (76-02.17) to improve his school record for the third time this season. He was unable to improve his mark in his final two throws and finished second for the second-straight season. With the second place showing in the finals, Nerdal earns his third All-America performance. Nerdal is the only Tiger track athlete to earn the All-America honors multiple times. With Nerdal’s three All-America performances, the Tiger track program now has 11 All-Americans (both indoor and outdoor). “We are ready to regroup and re-dedicate ourselves to the outdoor season and winning the hammer throw,” Robinson said. “I am proud to be Steffen’s coach! He is such an amazing competitor and I am really looking forward to the outdoor season.” The University of Memphis track and field program will now shift to the outdoor schedule which opens on Sat. March 20 in Memphis, Tenn., at the Rhodes Invite.
